Großer Traithen is the highest peak in the Rosenheim district and one of the standout summits in the Mangfallgebirge range. Its rocky summit, crowned with a cross, offers a sweeping panorama that makes the moderate effort of getting there well worth it.

The mountain's west flank drops steeply, around 1000 meters, into the Ursprungtal valley near Bayrischzell, creating a dramatic backdrop for the village below. To the north, a ridge runs over the gentle Fellalmsattel saddle and the Kleiner Traithen toward Sudelfeld, while to the east a narrow ridge densely covered with mountain pine leads via the Unterberger Joch and Steilner Joch toward the Brünnstein. From the top, views stretch south to the glaciated peaks of the Central Alps, including the Großglockner, Großvenediger and the Zillertal Alps, while the striking Kaisergebirge and the nearby Wendelstein to the north are particularly memorable sights.
