Standing at 1,132 m above sea level, the Großer Riedelstein is the crown of the Kaitersberg ridge in the Bavarian Forest — a rocky, characterful summit offering panoramic views in every direction and a genuine sense of wilderness just a short hike away. It is one of those peaks that rewards you instantly the moment you step onto the top.

In summer the mountain is a favourite with hikers and day-trippers, and it is easy to see why: the sweeping views stretch out in all directions, the forest trails are beautiful, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. In winter the slopes transform into a ski area, with a ski lift running from the Ecker Saddle up to just below the summit — making the Riedelstein a rare peak that serves both hikers and skiers equally well. Not far from the summit lies the Rauchröhren climbing area, a well-known spot for rock climbers in the region. To the south, the slightly lower Kleiner Riedelstein (1,042 m) makes a worthy companion summit.

The stone monument at the top honours Maximilian Schmidt — the beloved Bavarian writer known as 'Forest Schmidt' (Waldschmidt) — who dedicated his life and work to celebrating this very landscape. A fitting reason to linger a little longer on the summit.
