Dreitannenriegel is a peak in the Bavarian Forest that towers high above the town of Deggendorf, rewarding hikers with one of the finest panoramas in Lower Bavaria. It's a great choice if you want a proper hike without a huge time commitment — and a summit view that can stretch all the way to the Bavarian Alps.

Sitting on the ridge of the Front Bavarian Forest, the mountain has a wild, wooded character typical of this low mountain range, with rocky sections appearing just below the summit. In summer the forest offers shade and cool air, in autumn the woods turn golden, and in winter the trails can be snow-covered, calling for extra care. At the top you'll find a large summit cross, a summit register book, and an information panel explaining the panorama spread out below.

How to reach the summit

• Mietraching (Deggendorf) via the Sauloch gorge to Rohrmünz — trail no. 3, about 45 minutes to Rohrmünz, then a steep climb almost straight up the fall line to the summit; demanding route, sturdy footwear recommended due to smooth rock sections near the top
• Alternative approaches on foot are possible from Grafling, Gotteszell, Habischried, Bischofsmais and Rusel

Practical information

• A summit register book is kept at the top
• The final stretch from Rohrmünz crosses smooth rocks — not suitable in flip-flops or light sandals
• The summit and much of the surrounding slopes lie within the Deggendorfer Vorwald Natura 2000 (FFH) protected area

On clear autumn days with foehn wind, the view from the top stretches well beyond Lower Bavaria all the way to the Bavarian Alps — a rare treat that makes the climb well worth it.
