Chełmiec (851 m a.s.l.) is one of the most recognisable peaks in the Central Sudetes — its distinctive dome-shaped silhouette is visible from as far as Wrocław, some 70 km away. Rising steeply above the Wałbrzych Basin, it rewards hikers with a historic stone lookout tower, a striking 45-metre Millennium Cross, and sweeping views over Lower Silesia.

The massif is cloaked in mixed montane forest, with beech and spruce giving way near the summit to rare sycamore-maple groves — a priority habitat in the entire Sudetes. The forest is wonderfully varied through the seasons: fresh green in spring, cool and shaded in summer, ablaze with colour in autumn. On clear days the dome of Chełmiec is visible from the Wrocław plain, and at night the illuminated Millennium Cross glows above the valley.

• From Szczawno-Zdrój — yellow trail, approx. 1–1.5 hrs, easy to moderate
• From Wałbrzych or Boguszów-Gorce (Kuźnice Świdnickie) — blue trail (E3), moderate
• From Trójgarb ridge — red/green trail, moderate

• The historic stone lookout tower (22 m) at the summit is open for visits on weekend days during summer season; managed by the European Amateur Radio Communications Centre.
• Chełmiec has been part of the Crown of Lower Silesian Peaks since 2024 — worth logging your ascent.
• The area is protected under the Natura 2000 programme and a Landscape Protection Zone.
• The long-distance European trail E3 (Atlantic – Black Sea) passes directly over the summit.

The lookout tower, built in 1887–88 at the initiative of the Wałbrzych Mountain Society and funded by the Hochberg aristocratic family, was deliberately designed to resemble a romantic ruin — and it still looks the part among the Sudeten trees.
