The Büchelstein is a modest but charming peak in the southern Bavarian Forest, rewarding visitors with one of the finest panoramas over Lower Bavaria. At just 831 metres, this unassuming mountain hides a rocky viewpoint crowned with a large summit cross, drawing hikers and hang-gliding enthusiasts alike.

The forested slopes of the Büchelstein rise above the scenic Lallinger Winkel valley to the east and the village of Grattersdorf to the north. Shaded woodland trails lead to a rocky outlook just below the true summit, where on clear autumn days with Föhn wind conditions, you can even spot the Alpine chain stretching from the Dachstein to the Zugspitze. The atmosphere here is peaceful and low-key — a perfect spot for a relaxed family hike or an afternoon escape from the crowds, in any season.

Practical information

• A launch ramp for hang-gliders and paragliders has been built at the viewpoint rock, used whenever thermal conditions allow
• The European long-distance trail E8 passes close to the viewpoint

Fun fact: the Büchelstein may well have given its name to the traditional Bavarian stew Pichelsteiner. In 1839, the very first Büchelstein Festival was held here, a tradition later continued in nearby Grattersdorf.
