Seen from the Danube, Brotjacklriegel is the first proper mountain of the Bavarian Forest — a gateway peak into the sunny Sonnenwald region. At 1011 m it's not the tallest summit around, but its lookout tower and quiet forest trails make it a rewarding half-day trip.

The mountain is cloaked in dense spruce-beech forest typical of the Bavarian Forest, and its eastern slope above the village of Daxstein hides overgrown stone walls, remnants of old field-clearing work. In summer, families flock here for the nature trail; in autumn the forest turns golden and quiet; in winter the paths make for a peaceful snowshoe walk. A TV and radio transmission tower belonging to Bayerischer Rundfunk crowns the summit, visible for miles around.

• Hiking car park 'Jackl' above the village of Langfurth — via the Sonnenwald-Erlebnispfad nature trail, approx. 2 km, easy, about 30-45 minutes one way

• Since late 2022 the lookout tower is closed to visitors due to fire safety regulations

• The 27 m wooden lookout tower was built in 1924 and opened in 1925

Legend says the mountain is named after a baker known as Brot-Jackl, who supposedly hid here during the Thirty Years' War — though the name more likely comes from a misheard Bavarian phrase recorded by Napoleon's French surveyors.
