Breitenauriegel is a quiet gem in the Bavarian Forest, offering peaceful ridge walking and wide views without the crowds. It's the kind of summit you recommend to a friend looking for an easygoing escape near Bischofsmais.

Rising along the ridge of the Vorderer Bayerischer Wald, the mountain features gentle, forested slopes and open highland meadows. At the very top sits a rocky summit crowned with a metal summit cross, offering views northwest toward Gotteszell. In summer the surrounding forests are lush and green, autumn brings rich color to the woods, and winter transforms the trails into quiet, snow-covered paths perfect for a peaceful outing. North of the summit, toward Geißkopf, stretches the scenic Oberbreitenau highland plateau.

How to reach the summit

• Habischried — hiking trail, moderate difficulty, time depends on pace
• Bischofsmais — alternative starting point, convenient for local visitors
• Rusel or Rohrmünz — further approach options, including a stretch of the Main-Donau-Weg (eastern line)

• About 750 meters southeast of the summit stands a duty hut of the Bergwacht Deggendorf (mountain rescue service)
• The summit and much of the surrounding slopes lie within the Deggendorfer Vorwald Natura 2000 (FFH) protected area, so please tread lightly
