Aschenstein is a modest 944-metre peak tucked into the front ridge of the Bavarian Forest, overshadowed by its more famous neighbours Brotjacklriegel and Geißlstein. That's exactly why it's such a gem for hikers craving solitude and a truly wild corner of the forest.

Its rocky summit, crowned with a small summit cross and a hunting cabin nearby, has a quiet, almost forgotten atmosphere. Over the years the southern slope has grown over with trees, so there's no longer a view from the top itself. But just nearby, on a rise between Aschenstein and Geißlstein, you'll find the Kleiner Aschenstein (913 m) — a rocky viewpoint with its own summit cross and a summit register, offering a surprisingly beautiful panorama across the whole Dreiburgenland region toward Thurmansbang and Zenting. On clear foehn-wind days, the view stretches all the way to the Northern Limestone Alps, from the Dachstein to the Zugspitze.

• No marked trail leads to Aschenstein itself — the quickest way up is trail-less from Geißlstein, a short scramble through the forest.
• Geißlstein itself is reached via short, easy approaches from Daxstein, Haunstein, Bärndorf, Winden or Fradlberg, making it the more popular starting point for the area.

• There is no marked path to Aschenstein's summit — access is entirely off-trail.

The name Aschenstein comes from Esche (ash tree), originally meaning 'ash-tree rock' — a small piece of trivia most passersby never notice as they pass this unassuming summit.
