The Opava Mountains are a quiet, forested corner of the Eastern Sudetes straddling the Polish-Czech border — less crowded than the Karkonosze yet just as rewarding for anyone who loves peaceful hiking through green, rolling hills. There is a relaxed, almost secret quality to this region that keeps those who discover it coming back.

The landscape is a blend of dense conifer forests, meadow valleys, gurgling streams and rounded ridges. Trails wind through the Biskupia Kopa massif, follow the Golden Stream valley and connect charming villages tucked between the slopes. From the higher summits you can spot the peaks of the High Jeseníky range to the south and the flat expanse of Silesian lowlands to the north. The state border here follows an unusually winding line, giving the whole area a pleasantly cross-border character.

• Biskupia Kopa (889 m) — the highest peak on the Polish side, crowned with a viewing tower offering panoramas in all directions.
• Příčný vrch / Góra Poprzeczna (approx. 950 m) — the highest point of the entire range, located on the Czech side.
• Jarnołtówek and Pokrzywna — picturesque villages in the Golden Stream valley, perfect as a hiking base.
• Żabie Oczko and Morskie Oczko — flooded former quarry pits in the Olszak massif, hidden local gems worth a detour.

• Best time to visit: May–October — dry trails, lush greenery; autumn brings stunning foliage colours.
• Base towns: Głuchołazy, Prudnik, Jarnołtówek.
• Trail difficulty: mostly easy to moderate — great for families and first-time mountain hikers.
• Getting there: by car via Głuchołazy (road DK40); by bus from Nysa or Prudnik; by train to Głuchołazy station.

Fun fact: the Opava Mountains are the easternmost fragment of the Sudetes lying within Polish territory — a genuine geographical endpoint of the entire Sudeten chain.
