Trigrad Gorge is one of the most dramatic limestone canyons in Bulgaria, carved by the Trigradska River deep in the Western Rhodope Mountains. Here, sheer marble cliffs tower up to 300 meters above a narrow riverbed, and the river itself vanishes underground into the famous Devil's Throat Cave.
The gorge's atmosphere shifts with the seasons — cool and shaded in summer, ablaze with autumn color, and hung with icicles in winter along the eastern wall. Its narrow rocky floor, flanked by near-vertical slopes, creates a wild and imposing setting popular with photographers and cave explorers alike. This heavily karstified landscape hides an extensive network of caves and underground passages within its ancient Proterozoic marble.
How to get there
Practical information
Legend has it that Orpheus descended into the underworld through Devil's Throat Cave in search of Eurydice — few places feel as fittingly mythical as this one.
