Šalek Castle is a romantic ruin perched on a hill above the settlement of Šalek in Velenje, regarded as the most important architectural monument in the valley that takes its name from the castle - the Šaleška Valley. The surviving triangular tower, the oldest part of the castle, is a true rarity - its walls reach up to 2.5 metres thick, and its triangular floor plan is a unique feature in Europe.
The site has a distinctive character thanks to its dominant, exposed position on the hilltop, offering views over the valley and the surroundings of Velenje. The ruins are surrounded by greenery, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a rewarding stop for a walk combined with a dose of history - pleasant in spring when the hillside turns green, and equally atmospheric in autumn when the surrounding woods change colour.
How to get thereThe castle takes its name from the Knights of Šalek, first mentioned in 1264, and over the centuries it passed through the hands of the Counts of Celje and several noble families before finally falling into ruin in the 18th century.
