Valečov is one of the most atmospheric rock castle ruins in Bohemia — a medieval fortress carved directly into sandstone ridges that feels straight out of a fairy tale. Exploring it means clambering through rooms hewn from living rock, discovering hidden passageways and the remains of two palace buildings that have witnessed centuries of dramatic history.

Perched at around 320 m above sea level on the western edge of the Bohemian Paradise region, the castle sits among distinctive sandstone formations that give the whole area its magical character. Every season brings something different: spring wraps the old walls in fresh green, summer offers cool shade among the rocks, and autumn paints a vivid backdrop of colour against the grey stone. The terrain is varied but accessible for most visitors.

Here's a surprising fact: as late as the 19th century, local poor families were still living in the rock chambers of the castle — the last residents were forcibly evicted only in 1892 by order of the district authority in Mnichovo Hradiště.
