Böre Castle is a medieval hillfort hidden in the woods on a steep hilltop north of Ságvár, in Hungary's Somogy county. It's a spot for those who enjoy uncovering forgotten history rather than chasing panoramic views - the ruins themselves are the reward here.

Sitting on the northern spur of Szent László-hegy known as Böreváhegy, the site consists of two fortified sections covering 0.67 hectares in total. Deep defensive ditches and cross-cuts separate the sections, and an intriguing series of transverse trenches lines the narrow ridge leading up from the south. The whole area is now overgrown with forest, giving it a quiet, atmospheric feel that's especially striking in autumn and winter when the undergrowth thins out. Local legend even claims that the legendary chieftain Koppány once lived here, and that a secret underground tunnel connected the fort to Ságvár - though no evidence of this has ever been found.

How to get there

• From Lulla-Jabapuszta — yellow L trail, following the valley road toward the hunting lodge before climbing steeply up the hill; moderate difficulty
• Longer routes: red trail from Siófok-Töreki, or yellow trail from Ságvár, also reachable via Bábonymegyer or Nyim

In 1987, archaeologists Gyula Nováki and György Sándorfi surveyed the ruins and found a medieval pottery shard, confirming the site's long history.
